10 WAYS TO PREVENT A BREAK IN
1. Don’t leave keys in the obvious places
Burglars are aware that people will leave a key in front of the house “just in case”. The doormat, on top of the window frame, the letterbox and electricity box are the most obvious places to leave a key. For a few dollars you can invest in a combination lock keyholder, a much safer alternative to leaving it under the door mat.
2. The lights are on but nobody’s home
By leaving a single light on, you are preventing burglars knowing if you are at home or not. Whilst there are obvious environmental reasons to turn the lights off, it’s a good idea to leave a single, environmentally friendly fluorescent light on. It has been proven that burglars are less likely to break into a house with a light on. An even better solution is to install a sensored security light. Ask Prolux Electrical Contractors to install a security light and sensors as an added deterrent.
3. Use deadlocks
The standard locks on a door knob are usually not of the same quality as a deadlock. Investing in a dead lock is a wise investment, that will give you added peace of mind when you are out, or even when you are home.
4. Install a home alarm system
One of the first things a burglar looks for is a siren or a flashing light at the front of the house. Investing in a quality security system or security cameras (CCTV system) can make the difference. Call Prolux and ask about our security solutions to protect your home.
5. Lock you doors
What better way to invite danger to your home than to leave the doors and windows open. You may as well put an “open for inspection” sign at the front of your home.
6. Maintain your garden
Overgrown shrubs and trees make fantastic hiding spots for burglars. Trim that hedge, cut that grass and call Prolux Electrical Contractors to install a low voltage garden lighting kit. A well illuminated garden will drive burglars away.
7. Be careful what you say online
Burglars will research their victims before striking using popular social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Avoid publishing dates and times when you are going away. If you really have to tell people about it, wait until you get back.
8. Fix those broken and jarred locks
A broken or jarred lock is annoying. Many home owners think a lock alone is enough of a deterrent for burglars. How wrong they are. The first thing a burglar will do is check to see if the padlock is actually locked or not.
9. Secure your garage
Why would a burglar break into your house, when you already have thousands of dollars of equipment waiting for collection in your unlocked shed or garage. Lock your shed and garage. Prolux Electrical Contractors can also help put an alarm system on your home and garage, or add a sensored security light as an added deterrent.
10. When away, organise a friend to empty your mailbox and take out the rubbish
When on holidays, organise a close friend to empty your letterbox, bring your bins in and out. It’s also valuable to keep the house looking like it is lived in.
